About Us

Our Story

It started with a simple need: Due to declining health, Dr. Ray Moore’s aging mother was in need of 24/7 care. He wanted to keep her close to the community that she had lived in her entire life. With no viable options nearby, Dr. Moore, a respected Farmville physician, stepped up to the challenge.

He could not have done it alone. With the assistance of other community members from a wide variety of professions—a lawyer, a real estate agent and a banker, to name a few—the Southside Community Nursing Home opened its doors. The new facility, named Holly Manor, contained 60 beds and was completed in March of 1970.

Quickly reaching capacity, a new wing was added only 4 years after opening, providing an additional 60 beds. Brookview opened next, geared towards those requiring assisted-living care, meeting the community’s growing need for a variety of professional and compassionate senior care.

Years before full-service retirement communities became a mainstream concept, The Woodland opened The Courts, an independent living community. The Courts are only one example of how The Woodland consistently sets the industry standard in independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care. The Courts have grown from 12 cottages to 60 units, including one- and two-bedroom apartments.

The spirit of community that birthed The Woodland over 45 years ago created a continuing legacy of excellent skilled nursing and rehabilitative care. Today, under the leadership of President and CEO Greg Cole, The Woodland has expanded to offer full-service retirement living, yet maintains its deep roots in and for the community. It is still locally owned and operated, with the goal of fostering the same sense of belonging and family that brought it into existence.

With a combination of skilled professional care, a full spectrum of choices, and a strong sense of family and community, The Woodland has blossomed from a simple 60-bed nursing facility to become what it is today: the region’s premier senior care  community with long-term nursing facilities, assisted-living units, independent living cottages as well as a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility and wellness center. Through the years, the ultimate goal has remained unchanged: community focused care of the highest level in a setting that feels like home.

The Woodland Mission Statement

“Quality Rehabilitation Services, Skilled Nursing Care and Retirement Living at Affordable Costs”

I like it very much. I have a nice apartment and I find the staff to be very warm. In fact, it’s a very warm, cozy, comfortable place to live. I especially love the wellness program where we can go and get all the exercise we need. We have wonderful activities here. It’s a great place to live and I’m very comfortable here.

My husband and I came here from another facility and we are just so impressed with The Woodland. We wish we would have come here first. We have wonderful service, pools, places to exercise, lots of recreation, fantastic staff and wonderful food. We couldn’t be happier.

We love it here. We have lots of room and an attic where I can keep all my treasures. We are so very happy here because we feel we have found an extended family. The food is wonderful and the friends are wonderful. We have found this to be the most wonderful place you could possibly live. All the things we’d ever hoped to do, we are getting to do here.”

Moving here was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Everything is so convenient. One of the best things about living at The Woodland is that it’s a real family. We have a whole community here where we do things together. We fellowship with one another. It’s a blessing to be a part of The Woodland family.

It has everything I was looking for: independent living, five lovely dining rooms to choose to have our meals in, friendly staff and I was able to bring my pet to live with me. I just love it here.
